Lukas is a bartender through and through – living proof that sometimes a late-night, slightly boozy idea can change your life completely.
Lukas didn’t always work behind the bar – he originally trained as a packaging technician. But the quiet life in factory halls just wasn’t for him. One night at his favourite bar, after a drink or two, he spontaneously applied for a job. He got the interview, started part-time, and never looked back. He went on to earn his bartending diploma and train at the European Bartender School, dedicating himself entirely to what had quickly become his true passion.
He doesn’t have just one favourite drink. “It really depends on my mood,” Lukas says, “but you can’t beat a classic Old Fashioned.” We also ask the obvious question: do bartenders have an advantage with women? Lukas laughs. “Women like men who can cook. Bartenders cook with spirits – so it’s only natural that we’re appreciated.” The rest, the gentleman prefers not to comment on.
At the Jahnhalle, the focus is mainly on classic cocktails. Back in the day, great drinks were created with just a few ingredients – think of a Negroni, a Daiquiri or an Old Fashioned – recipes that have stood the test of time for over a hundred years. They belong on every good cocktail menu.
There’s a clear distance from the flashy disco cocktails of the ’90s, where the rule seemed to be: the brighter and sweeter, the better. “Every now and then, though, we like to mix in a twist or two or recommend something special – drinks that surprise our guests and ourselves and can be a little more adventurous,” Lukas adds, already making us crave the next round.
